In the lush vineyards of South Africa's Western Cape, nestled in the renowned Hemel en Aarde Valley, stands a remarkable testament to winemaking history and innovation: the Villiera Stand Alone Gamay Noir 2021. Crafted by Villiera Wines, a name synonymous with quality and creativity , and expertly guided by winemaker Xander Grier, this wine is a limited production gem from a certified heritage old vineyard.

Originating from an old bush wine vineyard planted at Villiera in 1981, this single vineyard is registered with the “Old Vine Project”, highlighting its historical significance. In the cellar the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation and malolactic fermentation (MLF). Unique was the fermentation in an open tank with 30% whole bunches, strategically placed for varied flavor profiles. This process strengthens the structure and tannin grip, and also contributes to the refreshing character of the wine. After fermentation, the wine remained on the skins for 10 days for better tannin integration, followed by 10 months of aging in a combination of Amphora and Barrel. This dual approach not only adds complexity and structure, but also builds texture and flavor, resulting in a wine that balances finesse with a bold statement.

The Villiera Stand Alone Gamay Noir embodies refined fragrance and medium-bodied elegance. On the nose it presents a bouquet of sweet candied red fruits, supported by red cherries, leading to a long, delicious red currant confit finish. The palate experiences a burst of juiciness - a wine that demands attention with every sip.

It is a versatile partner at the dining table. Its refined style makes it perfect for pairing with a variety of dishes, from grilled meats to savory vegetable pies. Best served at a cool 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, it offers a refreshing yet profound wine experience. Whether enjoyed in a quiet moment of solitude or shared among friends, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression.
