This red Petite Syrah from McManis was recently awarded the Best Buy prize in Wine Enthusiast, and we agree. A profound red wine with a very spicy character, that's what this McManis Petite Sirah stands for in short. The Petite Sirah grapes grow up in California and get all the attention from the winemaker, because he is a fan of this red grape. You can taste all the love in this wine!
The McManis family has been farming the northern interior of California for four generations. In 1990, fourth generation farmer Ron McManis and his wife Jamie founded the McManis Family Vineyards and today they farm more than 2,600 hectares of wine grapes. They produce a range of white and red wines from grapes sourced from ten vineyards. Although production levels are high, the quality of the wine is never compromised. McManis is known and loved for its big, bold and intensely fruity wines. With great attention to nature, labour-intensive methods such as leaf removal are used and there is continuous investment in new techniques. All this with only one vision: to produce the finest wines and grapes in the Northern San Jaoquin Valley with sustainable viticulture.
The grapes are harvested by hand and transported in small crates to avoid damage. This is followed by a period of wood aging in new and used oak barrels. This period is very important for the wine to settle down, it builds up a lot of flavour impressions and it gets a soft taste. On the nose, it is a typical Petite Syrah, full of black fruits, light spices, pepper and a touch of toffee and clove. The taste is full and complex with a nice softness, lots of dark berries and light spices make this an incomparable wine.
