This is the royal wine of winery Cornarea, a real powerhouse made from the complete Nebbiolo grapes from the Ruhr area. The grapes for this Italian red wine come from the most beautiful vineyard of Cornarea, which is only two hectares in size. But let's start with the history of winery Cornarea, because over the years it is still a family winery. It was started by a couple named Piero and Francesca and a few years later their sons Gian Nicola and Pierfranco joined them. Wines are made with the greatest care and precision and we can taste that too. The winery started in the year 1970 and has become known for the white Arneis wine that was completely extinct in the region before that time. Thanks to a lot of willpower and flexibility, the Arneis is back and the region is proud of that. But to come back to this great master because that is what it is, we go to the left bank of the Tanaro river because there is the very small piece of vineyard of Cornarea.
The vineyard received a docg designation (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) in 2005, becoming the third Nebbiolo docg in the Langa-Roero area, along with Barolo and Barbaresco. Only the Nebbiolo grape is used for this red wine, which comes from the historic Cornarea cru, owned by the company and located in Canale d'Alba. This city is the wine-producing capital of Roero, an area where Nebbiolo wine has been produced since ancient times. So it is the so-called "Barolo" of the Ruhr area, and we totally agree with that. After manual harvesting, this red wine matures for no less than 18 months in oak barrels. He developed into a true star and the barrel aging he undergoes another 6 months bottle aging. The bottles are stored in the cellars of Cornarea and only brought out when the wine is in top condition.
Open it quickly because it always needs to be decanted. During decantation we see a beautiful light ruby red color with a brown glow. The fragrance is complex, with a spicy note and a balsamic impression. It contains scents of plum, violet, morello cherry and licorice. The taste is mouth-watering, lots of black fruit with lots of herbs. Tasty with an elegant structure and light tannins. A pleasant, fruity and elegant wine with a refreshing aftertaste.
