The best of the best when it comes to Primitivo, the perfectly ripened Primitivo grapes come from vines with an average age of 80 years. These vines are planted in the famous sub-region of Manduria. The result is a luscious, extremely full-bodied red wine.
In 1921, one of the members of the Matichecchi family decided to pursue his passion for wine and bought a vineyard, the fruit of which he timidly began to produce wine. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Second World War prevented its further development and the vineyard has been forgotten for years. In 2001, the grandson of the vineyard's first owner, Ciro Matichecchi, decided to return to his passion for wine. This is how the CignoMoro company was born, making wines from nearly 100-year-old vines using traditional winemaking techniques, using modern technologies and with the desire to share these wines with the whole world.
The fruits used to make this wine come from 80-year-old vines grown in the perfect climate of sunny Manduria. After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and cooled to 10 degrees. They are then soaked for about 10 to 12 days, during which time the wine is pumped regularly. After the first alcoholic fermentation, another fermentation follows, the so-called malolactic fermentation, in which the sour malic acid changes into a delicate lactic acid. Finally, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
The 80 Vecchie Vigne Primitivo di Manduria turns a beautiful ruby red in the glass, immediately releasing a wonderful aroma. The intense fruity bouquet opens with aromas of blackberries, black cherries, currant and ripe plum with notes of cocoa, coffee and tobacco. Also fruity on the palate, intertwining notes of fresh and dried plums with notes of spices, honey and oak.
